Description

‘GUNTON STAG’ captures a moment of quiet authority and watchful stillness, portraying a mature red stag emerging from the atmosphere of the Norfolk Gunton Estate. Set against a subdued and shifting ground, the composition reflects both the physical presence and psychological weight of the animal, where strength exists alongside caution, instinct and vulnerability within the contemporary countryside.
The stag stands poised and alert, its gaze held with calm intensity as surrounding textures and tonal layers dissolve into soft shadow and light. Rather than isolating the animal from its environment, the work allows the landscape to merge with the figure itself, evoking the damp woodland edges, undergrowth and fading light characteristic of the Gunton Estate and North Norfolk parkland. The result is both portrait and atmosphere — an intimate study of presence within the natural world.
Rendered in monochrome dry mixed media — graphite, charcoal and PanPastel — the drawing combines refined tonal transitions with expressive mark-making, allowing texture, depth and movement to emerge organically across the surface. Attention is drawn to the intricate structure of the antlers, the softness of the stag’s coat and the surrounding atmospheric haze, balancing realism with suggestion and restraint.
Produced on large-scale cotton paper, the work enhances the immediacy and monumentality of the stag’s presence, inviting the viewer into a contemplative encounter with one of Britain’s most iconic native animals. Themes of endurance, dominance, seasonal change and the fragile relationship between wildlife and managed rural landscapes sit quietly beneath the surface of the piece.
Blending realism with atmosphere, ‘GUNTON STAG’ reflects a deep connection to British wildlife, Norfolk heritage landscapes and the silent tension that exists within untamed spaces — themes central to the artist’s wider practice.
